At a Denison University dual meet on Friday evening, the Malone University men's swimming & diving team lost to the host Big Red squad 123-72 while the Pioneer women's team was defeated by Denison 102-21. On a historic note, the meet, which was held at Gregory Pool, marked the final one for Big Red athletics in the 50+-year history of the facility as construction of Denison's new natatorium will be complete later this year.
In the opening 200 medley relay for the men, the Malone team of
Casey Meeson,
Chase Hooley,
Royce Kantner and
Jesse Martin led the way for two Pioneer teams entered in the race with a time of 1:44.00.
In the 200 freestyle,
Jesse Dwyer posted a time of 1:53.39 to pace three Pioneer swimmers in the nine-man event while
Zachery Reuther was right behind in 1:54.31. Dwyer also led Malone in the 500 free in 5:02.05.
Kantner led three Malone entrants in the 50 free, notching a time of 23.30, and in the 100 freestyle, was first among three Pioneer swimmers with a time of 51.68.
Meeson represented Malone in the 100 backstroke and clocked a time of 57.85 while
Grant Gillilan was the sole Pioneer entrant in the 100 breaststroke, touching the finish pad in 1:03.53 to finish third in a five-man field. Gillilan was first among two Malone swimmers in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:17.78.
In the 200 butterfly event,
Mason Geib pocketed a time of 2:13.65 while
Tyler Lunsford collected the top Malone time in the 100 fly in a time of 1:00.88.
In the closing 400 freestyle relay event, the unit of Meeson, Kantner, Martin and Hooley posted the better of two Pioneer team entries in the race with a time of 3:27.52, just 3.5 seconds off the school mark.
In the women's meet,
Emily Duncan posted a time of 1:19.88 in the 100 breaststroke event and followed that up with a 1:14.33 effort in the 100 butterfly. In her final event of the meet, Duncan swam a time of 2:30.05 in the 200 individual medley.
The Malone teams will close out their 2011-12 seasons by competing in the Appalachian Conference Championships February 16-18 in Barbourville, Kentucky (hosted by Union College).
