The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced on Monday that Malone University basketball players
Isiah Elliott and
Deborah Simmers have received the GLIAC South Division Men's and Women's Basketball Player of the Week Awards.
Elliott, a point guard from Canton, Ohio (McKinley H.S.), captured the men's honor after averaging 17.0 points, seven rebounds, 3.5 assists and three steals per game in a pair of conference road victories.
The 6'1 junior tossed in a game-high 19 points with six rebounds, four assists and three steals in the Pioneers' 90-83 victory at Lake Superior State (MI) University on Thursday. He then nailed a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer on Saturday to give Malone a thrilling 63-60 win at Northwood (MI) University. In all, Elliott finished Saturday's contest with a game-high 15 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and three steals. On the week, Elliott shot 38% from the field, 56% from three-point range, and 82% from the foul line. He is currently fourth in the conference in points scored per game (16.7) while ranking third in steals (2.6 per game) and sixth in assists (3.9 per game).
The Malone men, now 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the GLIAC, will try to secure their fourth straight conference victory on Saturday when they host Saginaw Valley State (MI) University at 1:00 p.m.
Simmers, a forward from Anchorage, Alaska (Anchorage Christian H.S.), received the women's honor after providing a big lift off the bench for Malone last week. The 5'9 junior, who is in her first season at Malone after transferring from Clark (WA) College, averaged 15.5 points, four rebounds and 3.5 assists per game to help the Pioneers tally a 1-1 record in contests at Lake Superior State and Northwood.
Simmers netted 17 points with five boards and four assists in a 60-47 triumph at LSSU on Thursday. She then posted 14 points, three rebounds and three assists during the Pioneers' 72-60 loss to Northwood on Saturday. On the week, Simmers shot 37% from the floor, 46% from three-point range and 67% from the foul line. She is currently averaging a team-high 11 points per game.
The Malone women, currently 5-2 overall and 2-2 in conference play, will also return to action on Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. contest against Saginaw Valley State (MI) University.
