The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced on Tuesday that Malone University basketball players
Isiah Elliott and
Deborah Simmers have received the GLIAC South Division Men's and Women's Basketball Player of the Week Awards.
Elliott, a point guard from Canton, Ohio (McKinley H.S.), earned the men's honor for the third time this season after averaging 24.0 points, four assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals in a pair of conference games.
He racked up 27 points, four assists and three rebounds in Malone's 79-58 home victory over Hillsdale (MI) College on Thursday. Elliott then registered a game-high 21 points to go with four rebounds, and four assists in the Pioneers' 74-62 defeat at Findlay on Saturday. The 6'1 junior currently ranks third in the GLIAC in scoring (19.6), fourth in assists (4.6) and fourth in steals (1.8) and joins Wayne State (MI) University's Mike Hollingsworth as the only players to receive the GLIAC's Player of the Week distinction on three separate occasions this year.
The Pioneer men, now 10-7 overall and 8-6 in GLIAC play, will be back in action Wednesday evening at home with a 7:30 p.m. non-conference contest against Penn State Greater Allegheny.
Simmers, a forward from Anchorage, Alaska (Anchorage Christian H.S.), received the women's honor by averaging 17 points, 3.0 rebounds, two assists, and 1.5 blocks in two GLIAC contests last week.
She posted a season-high 24 points to go with three rebounds, three assists and two blocks in Malone's 75-60 home win over Hillsdale on Thursday. The 5'9 junior then registered 10 points, three rebounds and two steals in a 67-55 loss at Findlay on Saturday.
The Malone women, 10-8 overall and 6-8 in the GLIAC, return to play on Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. home game against local rival Walsh University.
This is the second time this year that the Pioneers have swept both awards as Elliott and Simmers also received South Division Player of the Week accolades on December 10, 2012.
