The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced on Monday that Malone University junior forward
Cory Veldhuizen received the GLIAC South Division Men's Basketball Player of the Week Award.
Veldhuizen averaged 18.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, two assists, 1.5 steals and one block per contest last week to lead the Pioneers to victories over Hillsdale (MI) College and the University of Findlay, the top two teams in the GLIAC South Division standings.
The junior forward from North Canton, Ohio (Hoover H.S.) poured in 24 points while grabbing seven rebounds and three steals in a 61-59 road win at Hillsdale on Thursday. Veldhuizen then registered 13 points, 10 rebounds and three assists in Saturday's 77-69 home triumph over Findlay.
On the week, Veldhuizen connected on 52% (14 of 27) of his field-goal attempts and eight of 10 free throws.
Malone, now 14-11 overall and 11-10 in the GLIAC, will wrap up its regular-season schedule on Saturday when the squad travels to Walsh University for the 49th annual Mayors' Cup. Although the Pioneers are not eligible to compete in the GLIAC Tournament this year, they can secure a spot in the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) East Region Tournament with a win over the rival Cavaliers on Saturday.
