The Malone University women's tennis team showed improvement in 2012, head coach Brian Mogus's second season at the reins. The Pioneers flexed their muscles out of conference, posting a 13-3 record, but struggled in conference play, managing just two wins in 14 tries. Nonetheless, the 15 win season and .500 record prepared them well for this season as they hunt for more success in GLIAC play.

"The real challenge in the GLIAC is not just playing tough competition every match but also traveling and playing matches three days in a row," said Mogus. "We are going to spend a lot of time focusing on handling stressful situations, as well as putting a renewed emphasis on recovery."

Sophomore Asia Harris is back as the team's top returner. As a freshman, Harris posted a 21-8 singles record, including a 19-7 record playing out of the #1 singles position, and a 17-11 doubles record. Her six wins in GLIAC play singles competition also paced the team by a fair margin and helped her earn NCCAA All-American recognition.

Joining Harris as the team's top returners are seniors Kaley Kahoun, Alexis Hill and Janelle Linder. Kahoun was solid for the Pioneers last season going 12-14 in singles play. Hill showcased her versatility finishing second on the team in win percentage in doubles play with a record of 7-4 (.636%), while Linder added 10 singles victories and seven doubles wins.

Mogus singled out freshmen Ana Hernandez and local product, Krista Leonard, as girls who should make an immediate impact.

Freshmen Chrissy Cameron, Katherine Karkoska, and Kayla May, and junior transfer Christine Miller will also be vying to crack the top six.

"We are very young with six new faces," explained Mogus. "There will be some learning experiences along the way but I think we have the talent in place to do some exciting things."

The Pioneers are set to open the 2013-14 season by hosting three conference matches at Harvard Courts, (located in Weis Park, just to the east of Malone's campus).  The Pioneers will square off against Grand Valley State (MI) University at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6, Ferris State (MI) University at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7 and Northwood (MI) University at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8.
