Nathan Tarter, a senior on the Malone University men's golf team, was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men's Golf Athlete of the Week for his performance at last weekend's NCAA Division II Midwest Regional.
Among an impressive 29-team field at the two-day regional event, Tarter earned medalist honors among 145 golfers participating to pace the Pioneers to the team championship.
At the par 71, 6673-yard Elks Runs Golf Course in Batavia, Ohio, Malone posted a 36-hole total of 578 (292-286), +10 for the tournament, to easily defeat runner-up and GLIAC opponent Ferris State University (MI), which posted a 596 total, by an impressive 18 strokes.
Tarter's first-day round of 68 placed him in a tie for the lead at three-under-par and his final round of 70 (-1) gave him the individual tournament championship at 138 (-4). Tarter was only one of three players to break par for the tournament.
Tarter had also won the GLIAC Athlete of the Week accolade during the recent fall campaign as he pocketed the honor during the last week of September after earning medalist honors at the GLIAC North Invitational.
Malone will next compete in its own Spring Classic, at the Tannenhauf Golf Course in Alliance, Ohio, this Friday and Saturday (April 11-12) in an event that was originally scheduled for March 28-29 but that was cancelled due to weather.
