Logan Gray, a senior first baseman on the Malone University baseball team, has been named to the 2013-14 Capital One Academic All-District IV First Team.
A Chemistry major from Gnadenhutten, Ohio (Indian Valley H.S.), Gray was one of 12 baseball players to receive the First Team distinction from among the nearly 30 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) baseball programs that make up NCAA Division II District IV.
After missing a large portion of his junior year due to injury, Gray has bounced back with a strong senior campaign. He entered the final week of the regular season batting a team-best .364 while leading the GLIAC with 14 doubles and ranking third in the conference with 56 base hits. He also paces the Pioneers in triples with two and RBI's with 26. Gray was voted to the NCCAA All-East Region Team as a sophomore in 2012 after helping Malone capture the NCCAA East Region Title and earn a spot in the NCCAA World Series.
Gray has tallied a.328 batting average over his four-year Pioneer career with 38 career doubles, six triples, two home runs and 68 RBI's. In addition to his accomplishments on the baseball diamond, he has also been recognized for his hard work in the classroom, having earned GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team recognition last spring and the Division II Athletic Directors Association (ADA) Academic Achievement Award in 2011, 2012 and 2013.
The Academic All-District Teams, selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), recognize the nation's top student-athletes for both athletic and academic accomplishments. Nominees for the award must be a starter or important reserve, possess at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average (on a 4.00 scale), and have achieved at least sophomore academic status.
The Capital One Academic All-America program is now in its third year of an expanded format in which teams are selected from NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and a College Division, consisting of NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools. Honorees are first selected from eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. First-Team Academic All-District honorees then advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot. First, Second and Third Team All-America honorees will be voted upon and then announced in late May.
