Men's Indoor Track DMR Unit Wins On Day One Of Spire Midwest Open

Scott Whitaker anchored Malone's winning's DMR unit at the Spire Midwest Open on Friday.

The Malone University men's and women's indoor track & field teams opened their competition at the two-day Spire Midwest Open at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio on Friday night with the Pioneer men's team competing in two events.
 
First, in the men's distance medley relay, the unit of Brandon Simmons, Eric Barto, Matt Hendrix and Scott Whitaker won the event, among a six-team field, in a time of 10:10.96.
 
Then, in the 5000-event among 29 runners, the Pioneer men had three entries as Gage Black led the way with an impressive runner-up finish overall in a time of 14:59.26 while Nate Boyer also cracked the top 10 with a nine-place finish in 15:42.08.  Nick Fresenko posted a time of 15:47.66 to place 14th.
 
The Malone men's and women's teams will compete in a full day of competition on the second and final day on Saturday with events starting at 10:00 a.m.  Live results will again be available.
