Day One ResultsÂ
Numerous student-athletes on the Malone University men's and women's outdoor track & field teams competed Friday on the first of two days of competition at the Raleigh Relays, hosted by North Carolina State University, in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Â
For the Malone women,
Sara Polatas earned a ninth-place finish, among 77 entrants, in the 5000 meters in a personal-best time of 17:21.02, a mark that only four Pioneer women's student-athletes have ever topped. In addition,
Hannah Campbell was close behind Polatas in today's race, in 14th in 17:30.57.
Â
In the 1500-meter event,
Mackenzie Keller recorded a personal-best time of 4:41.42.
Â
In the 3000-meter steeplechase, although
Mattison Rankin's 15th-place time of 11:01.33, among 36 entrants, was not a personal-best time (her PR is 10:54.87), her time in the race was still one that only one other Pioneer women's student-athlete had ever run faster. Joanna Genter's time of 10:53.30 in 2005 ranks first on Malone's all-time top ten performer list while Rankin holds the #2 spot.  Also in today's race,
Madison Schuler posted a time of 11:18.73 which was shy of her own PR of 11:12.60 (the #6 spot on the Pioneers' all-time list).
Â
For the men's team,
Scott Whitaker posted a runner-up finish, among a staggering 107 runners in the 1500-meter competition, with a time of 3:50.00, which was just a fraction of a second off the winning time of 3:49.82. Whitaker's time was just off his own PR of 3:48.24, a mark that only one other Malone student-athlete (Chris Sinick, 2009, 3:46.90) has surpassed.
Â
Among 55 entrants in the 110-meter hurdles prelims,
Lepear Smith finished 18th in a time of 14.90 seconds and did not qualify for the finals.
Â
In the 3000-meter steeplechase, among 39 competitors,
Gage Black finished 12th in a time of 9:16.00.
Â
In addition,
Ryan Roush and
Andrew Trusty will be competing in the 10,000 meters late this evening (start time set for 10:20 p.m.). Results from this race will be posted as part of Saturday's day two story.
Â
