Malone University centerfielder
Brenden Wells has earned the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's (GLIAC) South Division Baseball Player of the Week Award after leading the Pioneers to an 8-5 record during the squad's season-opening trip to the Tucson Invitational.
Wells, a sophomore from Beloit, Ohio (West Branch H.S.), has opened the year on a 13-game hitting streak. The leadoff hitter, who transferred to Malone from NCAA Division I Marshall University, compiled a .509 (27 of 53) batting average in Arizona with five doubles, three triples and 17 RBI's. He also scored 17 runs and swiped four bases last week and currently boasts a .550 on-base percentage with a .717 slugging percentage.
Malone is scheduled to return to action next Tuesday (March 17) when it hosts its home opener against Mercyhurst (PA) University. The first pitch of the doubleheader between the Pioneers and Lakers is slated for 2:00 p.m. at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium.
