The Malone University men's and women's track & field teams completed the first full day of competition at the GLIAC Championships in Hillsdale, Michigan on Thursday as one school record, one first-place finish and numerous NCAA Div. II national provisional qualifying times were posted by Pioneer student-athletes.
Through the second of three days of competition, the Malone women are currently in sixth place, among 13 teams scoring points, with 19 points as Grand Valley State University (MI) holds the lead with 83 points. The Pioneer men are currently in eighth place, among the 12 teams scoring points, with 18 points as Grand Valley State also leads the men's competition with 47 points. Â
For the women, among 15 competitors in the 3000-meter steeplechase,
Mattison Rankin smashed the 10-year-old school record, which had been 10:53.3 (J. Genter, 2005), with a very strong NCAA Div. II national provisional qualifying time of 10:39.92 to finish fourth in the race. Additionally, also breaking the previous school record heading into the race,
Madison Schuler was close behind in sixth in 10:49.33, a time that now places her in the #2 spot on Malone's all-time performer list for the event. Schuler's time was also an NCAA Div. II national provisional time.
Although
Sara Polatas was not quite able to reach her impressive school-record performance of 35:20.76 in the 10,000 meters, that she posted at the Mt. SAC Relays last weekend, she posted an outstanding time of 35:56.85 to capture the event among 23 competitors. Her time was again an NCAA Div. II national provisional time.
Taryn Chapman and
Corrina Ruffener finished up their competition in the heptathlon. Chapman racked up 4152 total points to finish eighth among 14 athletes while Ruffener totaled 3806 points to finish in 11th place. Chapman's total puts her in the #5 spot on the school's all-time top performer list for the heptathlon while Ruffener is just 10 points out of the #10 spot of 3816. In the final three events of the competition held today, Chapman finished 11th in the long jump (15' 0.75"), ninth in the javelin (81' 3") and second in the 800 meters (2:26.42) while Ruffener took 10th in the long jump (15' 4"), 11th in the javelin (72' 11") and ninth in the 800 meters (2:37.79).
In the 400-meter hurdle prelims, among 22 competitors,
Emily Fisher blazed to a runner-up finish in a time of 1:02.74 while
Hannah Boss collected a sixth-place finish in 1:03.98. Both qualified for tomorrow's finals.
In the 25-woman 100-meter dash prelim competition,
Crystal Barber and
Karli Oprian both qualified for Friday's finals with times of 12.19 (5th) and 12.20 seconds (7th), respectively.
Then, in the 200-meter dash prelims, among 28 women, Barber placed fifth in a personal-best time of 25.22 seconds to qualify for the finals.
Among 26 runners in the 800-meter prelims,
Erika Rector cruised to a sixth-place finish in a time of 2:16.29 to qualify for tomorrow's finals.
In the 1500-meter prelims,
Mackenzie Keller qualified for tomorrow's finals by finishing ninth, among 32 entrants, in a time of 4:43.75.
In the 100-meter hurdles prelims, Boss paced Malone with a 15th-place finish in 14.84 seconds but did not qualify for the finals. The mark was a personal best for her, though, and keeps her in the #3 spot on Malone's all-time performer list for the event.
In field events,
Lyndsey Bates finished 12th in the hammer throw with a toss of 157' 6".
Among 26 jumpers in the long jump,
Tayler Carpenter collected a ninth-place finish with a personal-best leap of 17' 9", which moves her into the eighth spot on the school's all-time top performer list for the event.
For the men's squad,
Ryan Roush posted a runner-up finish, among 25 runners, in the 10,000 meters in a time of 31:03.47. In addition,
Luis Carbajal finished fifth in 31:16.57 and
Jordan McKelley took 10th in 31:46.45.
Cameron Mack closed out the final day of his decathlon events as he tallied 5575 points to finish ninth among 12 athletes in the competition. In today's last five events, Mack finished sixth in the 110-meter hurdles (16.13), eighth in the discus (99' 3"), 12th in the pole vault (9' 6.25"), seventh in the javelin (141' 4") and 12th in the 1500 meters (5:39.78).
In the 110-meter hurdles prelims,
Lepear Smith finished fourth among 13 hurdlers in a time of 14.38 seconds to earn a spot in Friday's finals.
Among 24 competitors in the 3000-meter steeplechase,
Gage Black finished sixth in a time of 9:21.70 while
Nick Fresenko also pocketed a top-ten placement in 10th at 9:37.87.
In the 1500-meter prelims,
Deondre Martin earned a spot in tomorrow's finals as he placed 11th, among 23 competitors, in a time of 4:04.79.
Among 24 athletes in the 400-meter hurdle prelims,
Matt Shoup tallied a fifth-place finish in a personal-best time of 55.25 seconds to snag a spot in Friday's finals.
In the field events,
Tim Makowski finished seventh, among 22 entrants, in the javelin competition as he posted a throw of 161' 5".
Lavell Morgan placed eighth, among 19 competitors, in the high jump as he cleared the bar at 6' 4.75".
The GLIAC Championships will conclude on Friday with the finals of the running events, numerous other field events, the 5000-meter events and the 4x400 meter relays.Â
