The Pioneers began their season on the road last week against Ashland University, where they fell 3-0. Fans can expect high levels of energy as the Pioneer men will be anxious to play their first home game of the season against their rival. Playing in their final contest on Pioneer Field will add to their energy as well. Sam Condon, a red-shirt sophomore, led Malone in shot attempts last week in the contest against Ashland. The Pioneer starting lineup featured mainly veterans in the season opener. Two out of the starting eleven for the Pioneers were freshmen, Christopher Mally and Nathan McFeaters. With the exception of Jake Martell, all of the players who came off the bench for Malone were newcomers to the program for the 2017 season.

The Cavaliers will be participating in their first conference game as a member of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. Walsh is coming over from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, as the Pioneers had done just a season before. Walsh started its 2017 campaign with a 1-0 victory over Slippery Rock  University before tying Salem International University 3-3 in double overtime. All four goals scored by Walsh this season have been scored by different players. Sophomore defender Brandon Denton has assisted on two of the four goals for Walsh. The Cavaliers beat Malone in their match last season by a final tally of 1-0 in overtime.
